FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 27 (UPI) -- A cruise ship lost power shortly after leaving Florida, and the passengers spent more than 4 hours dead in the water, Princess Cruises said.

The Emerald Princess was 90 minutes out of Port Everglades when the power failed Sunday at 6:30 p.m., the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported. That left the ship without air conditioning and unable to move until 11 p.m.

Karen Candy, a Princess spokeswoman, told the newspaper in an e-mail message the ship, its passengers and crew were never at risk. She said the only change made in the ship's one-week itinerary was dropping a stop at Princess Cay on Monday.

A technician is to come on board Wednesday in St. Maarten to determine why the power failed, she said. Once the cause has been found, she said the company will decide whether passengers are entitled to compensation.
