NEW YORK, July 27 (UPI) -- New York has begun a criminal probe of a woman posing as a nun to solicit donations for a non-existent orphanage, officials say.
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo subpoenaed Mindy LeGrand, who allegedly has been pretending to be a nun and seeking money from the public for more than a decade, the New York Post reported Tuesday.
Investigators are looking at both LeGrand and her "church," an organization founded by Davernon LeGrand, a convicted rapist and serial killer, the newspaper said.
The LeGrands have allegedly been sending out panhandling "nuns" since at least 1961.
Mindy LeGrand was last arrested in 1997 on panhandling charges.
New York City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. said he is introducing legislation to prohibit such false solicitations.
"Scam artists like this hurt legitimate churches and charities, and police and prosecutors need a tool to combat it, which apparently they don't have," he said.
