Fireworks malfunction in Utah, 10 hurt

SALT LAKE CITY, July 26 (UPI) -- Ten people were injured when fireworks were released into a crowd of people during a weekend Pioneer Day celebration, Salt Lake City officials said.

The Salt Lake Tribune said one person remained hospitalized Sunday, while the other victims were treated for burns and shrapnel injuries at the scene after the mishap Saturday night. The injured included children and adults, authorities said.

Fire department spokesman Scott Freitag told the newspaper the reason for the malfunction was under investigation.

Lantis Fireworks and Lasers, a longtime provider of fireworks in Salt Lake City, did not immediately return a call for comment, the Tribune said.
