A Taliban spokesman said they wanted to take both men alive, but a firefight broke out, killing one of the servicemen. The other is alive but wounded and is being held in a safe location, he said.

CNN reported three U.S. military officials said the two service members are from the Navy.

The two men initially went missing after leaving their compound in Kabul in a non-military vehicle. Adm. Mike Mullen called it an "unusual circumstance."

Coalition forces have mounted a ground and air search for the two missing soldiers but did not release information about their identities.

"Every available asset is being brought to bear" to find them, Lt. Col. Joseph T. Breasseale, a NATO spokesman in Kabul, said.
