Officials step down in Calif. pay scandal

BELL, Calif., July 23 (UPI) -- Three top administrators in one of Los Angeles County's poorest municipalities have agreed to give up their hefty salaries and resign, officials said.

The city manager, police chief and assistant city manager of Bell will step down without severance following a closed-door meeting at City Hall over a pay scandal, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

Angry residents of Bell, a suburb of Los Angeles, waited until midnight to find out if the officials would leave after they were denied access to a City Council meeting that began Thursday afternoon.

Residents learned earlier this month that City Manager Robert Rizzo was being paid $787,637 a year.

Police Chief Randy Adams' salary was $457,000 and Assistant City Manager Angela Spaccia was making $376,288.

State Attorney General Jerry Brown, who has ordered an investigation into the high salaries, called the compensation packages "almost beyond belief."

Bell is a mostly Hispanic community of 38,000 located 10 miles southwest of Los Angeles.
