SAN DIEGO, July 23 (UPI) -- U.S. prosecutors Friday announced charges against 43 members of a Mexican drug ring, including a high-ranking Mexican law enforcement official.
The charges targeted the Fernando Sanchez Organization, an offshoot of the notorious Arellano Felix cartel, and included defendants in Mexico and the San Diego area.
One of the defendants was identified as Jesus Quinones Marques, the head of the international liaison office for the Baja California Attorney General's Office. Quinones allegedly provided the Sanchez gang with confidential information and helped arrange to have various rivals arrested by Mexican police, the U.S. Attorney's office said in a written statement.
The other defendants were charged with drug trafficking, kidnapping, murder and other offenses. Of the 43 charged, 27 had been arrested in San Diego as of Friday and another four were in custody in Mexico.
