SAN FRANCISCO, July 23 (UPI) -- The step-grandfather of a toddler mauled to death by the family's pit bulls was arrested and charged with child endangerment, California authorities said.
Steven Hayashi, 52, of Concord, was arrested Thursday on the charge of felony endangerment and another felony charge of owning a mischievous animal causing great bodily injury or death, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Jacob Bisbee, age 2, opened the door to the family garage and was set upon by three of the family's pit bull terriers, the newspaper said.
He was pronounced dead at a local hospital of "obviously very severe" injuries, Concord police Lt. Jim Lardieri said.
Hayashi was not at the home when the attack took place but acknowledged to police he owned the pit bulls.
Contra Costa County Animal Services euthanized all the dogs.
It is unknown what caused the dogs to attack, police said.
"The dogs were part of the household," Lardieri said. "As far as I know, they had them as pets."
