DETROIT, July 22 (UPI) -- Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has fired Police Chief Warren Evans, praising his work during his year on the job but saying he had become "compromised."
Bing was not specific about his reasons, The Detroit News reported. He referred to "certain events."
Evans handed the mayor his resignation Wednesday afternoon, not long after giving the city council a briefing, the Detroit Free Press said.
The homicide rate in one of the most troubled U.S. cities has dropped 27 percent since last year. But Evans has also been called over-aggressive and publicity hungry.
Bing recently nixed the chief's deal for a reality TV show about the police department.
In May, two police raids ended tragically. A police officer was killed in the first and a 7-year-old girl in the second.
"I do think that he made a positive impact on the Police Department, but he was compromised in some decisions he made that will lead him not to be able to lead his troops down the road," Bing said. "There were certain events that happened, certain decisions that were made over a period of time that led us to this decision."
