DETROIT, July 21 (UPI) -- The president of Wayne State University in Detroit says he is resigning after two years at the school to be with his wife, who is battling breast cancer.
The resignation of Jay Noren will take effect Aug. 6 and current university provost Phyllis Vroom will become acting president, the Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday.
The Wayne State board of governors will eventually name an interim and then permanent replacement, Chairman Richard Bernstein said.
"We're saddened by the news," Bernstein said. "(Noren is) a real genuine class act."
Though stepping down as president, Noren won't be leaving Wayne State. As a tenured faculty member in the university's medical school, he will be considered on sabbatical, Bernstein said.
Personal issues "during this past year have become increasingly important and are fundamental to my decision to resign," Noren said in a statement.
His wife Sheri, a provost at Illinois State, is doing well and chemotherapy has been successful, Noren said.
