FULTON, Miss., July 20 (UPI) -- A Mississippi school district admitted it should have allowed a lesbian student to bring her girlfriend to the prom, a legal group says.
The American Civil Liberties Union said the Itawamba School District also agreed to pay Constance McMillen $35,000 in damages and to pay legal fees. The school not only canceled the official prom at Itawamba Area High School but allowed parents to organize an unofficial prom and a "decoy" event to keep McMillen away.
McMillen said she was forced to transfer in her senior year because students blamed her for the cancellation.
"I'm so glad this is all over. I won't ever get my prom back, but it's worth it if it changes things at my school," she said.
In March, a federal judge ruled McMillen's rights had been violated by the prom cancellation. The judge was told McMillen and her girlfriend would be able to attend the private prom.
Parents then canceled that prom and organized another event plus one 30 miles away for McMillen. She realized something was wrong when she and her girlfriend found only seven other students there.
