Violence rocks Afghanistan before summit

KABUL, Afghanistan, July 18 (UPI) -- Insurgents launched a wave of violence in Afghanistan Sunday, two days before an international conference of foreign ministers in Kabul, officials said.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who arrived Sunday in Pakistan, is among those expected to attend the Afghan conference.

The violence included a prison break, a suicide bombing and improvised explosive devices, The New York Times reported Sunday.

In western Afghanistan's Farah province, a series of attacks inside and outside a prison -- including explosions -- allowed 20 Taliban prisoners to escape, Afghan security officials said.

The Times said a suicide bomber on foot in Kabul killed three people, blowing himself up on a heavily traveled road that runs between two parts of a housing complex. The report said the complex, built by the Russians, is home to a number of members of Parliament, professionals and government workers.

At least 45 people were injured, the report said.

The Times said Farah has been relatively peaceful compared to the rest of the country.
