CALGARY, Alberta, July 14 (UPI) -- An American Airlines passenger plane on a flight from Dallas to Tokyo made an emergency landing in Calgary, Alberta, after having engine trouble, officials say.

The Boeing 777 had 233 passengers on board when it made the precautionary landing shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday, the Calgary Herald reported.

The twin-engine jetliner is designed to be flown safely on one engine, so the malfunctioning engine was shut down by the flight crew, who made the decision to land in Calgary, the newspaper said.

American Airlines is investigating but had not determined the cause of the malfunction, airline spokeswoman Amanda Huguely said.
