WASHINGTON, July 14 (UPI) -- Two Republican senators said Wednesday they will try to prevent the Obama administration from suing Arizona over its immigration law.
Among other things, the law requires police to check the immigration status of those officers believe to be illegal aliens. The administration suit says immigration is a federal matter, and the Arizona law could inspire a patchwork of state immigration laws across the country.
The GOP senators, Jim DeMint of South Carolina and David Vitter of Louisiana, said they will attempt to amend small-business legislation, set to be debated on the Senate floor next week, with language that would stop the suit, The Hill newspaper reported.
In a statement, DeMint said, "States like Arizona shouldn't be prosecuted for protecting their citizens when the federal government fails to do so. The federal government is rewarding illegal behavior and encouraging many more to enter our nation illegally when they refuse to enforce our laws."
