Woman admits sex with son she gave away

PONTIAC, Mich., July 13 (UPI) -- A Michigan woman has been given a long prison term after pleading guilty to a sexual relationship with the teenage son she had given up for adoption.

Aimee Louise Sword, 36, of Waterford was sentenced to nine to 30 years Monday, The Detroit News reported. Assistant Prosecutor Nicki Weisberger said Sword was guilty of a "selfish, cowardly, despicable act" for having sex with the 14-year-old while he was going through a difficult time.

Sword was also ordered to refrain from any contact with her son, who is now 16.

"I want to apologize to the court, my children and my sister," Sword told O'Brien. "I am remorseful for everything that occurred. ... I don't understand it."

Sword, who later married and had five more children, gave the boy up for adoption shortly after his birth. Her lawyer, Mitchell Ribitwer, said his adoptive parents sent her annual updates, and she tracked the boy down because she was concerned when they stopped.

Weisberger said it was the son who got in touch with her.

Ribitwer said his client decided to plead guilty because she did not want her son to have to go through the ordeal of testifying against her.
