Three hikers lost in hot Arizona mountains

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz., July 13 (UPI) -- Search parties returned to the scorching-hot mountains outside Phoenix Tuesday to look for three missing hikers, sheriff's deputies said.

The three Utah residents were apparently looking for gold in the Superstition Mountains when contact with them was lost a week ago.

The National Weather Service predicted temperatures up to 110 in the Phoenix area Tuesday.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said the trio had planned to spend their nights in a motel, so they likely were not carrying camping gear or much in the way of supplies.

One of the missing men, 49-year-old Kurtis Merworth, had to be rescued in the same area a year ago when he became lost while out searching for the legendary Lost Dutchman Mine, the Arizona Republic reported.
