Church: Schuller 'not retiring'

LOS ANGELES, July 12 (UPI) -- Los Angeles-based television evangelist Robert H. Schuller is not retiring, his daughter said in response to a spreading media and Internet rumor.

The Crystal Cathedral's senior pastor Sheila Coleman reacted angrily to the rumors with a statement Sunday, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"Dad is not retiring," she said. "I told (the congregation) that Dad's role would not be changing and mine would not be changing."

The media buzz started when the Orange County Register newspaper reported Schuller had announced his departure during morning services, the Times said.

Other media outlets and Internet sites picked up the story that the creator of the Christian television show "Hour of Power" was retiring.

Coleman, who has been serving as the church's unofficial senior pastor for about a year, said the only change was that her role had been made official by the reformed Church in America.

The change was largely symbolic, she said, "just an affirmation and celebration from the denomination."

"It's irresponsible journalism that nobody asked me to clarify," Coleman said. "It's troubling because we have a lot of viewers all over the world thinking: 'My pastor's leaving.'"
