Rwanda priest denies genocide accusations

ARUSHA, Tanzania, July 10 (UPI) -- A Pentecostal priest has pleaded not guilty to charges he ordered ethnic Tutsis killed when they sought refuge in his church in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

Jean-Bosco Uwinkindi, who was arrested last week after entering western Uganda from the Republic of Congo, appeared in Tanzania Friday before judges of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, created by the United Nations, the BBC reported.

Uwinkindi is accused of ordering the killings of the ethnic Tutsis while pastor at the Pentecostal Church near Rwanda's capital, Kigali, in 1994.

After the genocide, prosecutors allege in an indictment, some 2,000 corpses were found near the church.

About 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by Hutu militias in 100 days in the Rwandan genocide.

Uwinkindi was indicted in 2001 on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.

He had been one of the most-wanted suspects in Uganda and the United States had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest.
