Steele: 'I ain't going anywhere'

DENVER, July 8 (UPI) -- Michael Steele, the U.S. Republican National Committee chairman, said Thursday he won't step down, despite critics.

The Hill newspaper said Steele waved off calls from fellow conservatives that he should resign after saying the conflict in Afghanistan was a war of President Obama's choosing. "Every time something happens, people say 'He should step down,'" Steele said, The Hill reported. "The reality is that's not happening, so stop the noise on that. You don't need the distraction.

"We're focused on winning," he said at an appearance with the Colorado Republican Party. "I ain't going anywhere. I'm here, I'm here."

Steele made the anti-war comments in Connecticut last week, but Steele then issued a statement saying he supports the war.
