Magnitude 5.4 quake hits Southern Calif.

BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif., July 7 (UPI) -- A magnitude-5.4 earthquake rocked Southern California Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake, centered about 13 miles north-northwest of Borrego Springs in a remote area north of Anza Borrego Desert State Park, struck at 4:53 p.m. PDT, seismologists said.

The quake was felt as far to the northwest as Los Angeles and to the southwest as San Diego. There were reports of minor property damage but no initial reports of injuries.

Witnesses described the quake as a "rolling" temblor that lasted for as much as 30 seconds.

One witness told KCBS-TV, Los Angeles, Borrego Springs is "very sparsely populated" during the summertime.
