WASHINGTON, July 6 (UPI) -- Voters in the United States could elect a trio of independent governors when they go to the polls in November, political experts say.
For the first time since former pro-wrestler Jesse Ventura was elected governor of Minnesota in 1999, independents with solid chances of winning are running for governor in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine, USA Today reported Tuesday.
Darrell West, director of governance studies at the Brookings Institution, says economic conditions and public disenchantment with the major political parties have created an opportunity for independent candidates.
"The biggest obstacle an independent faces is convincing the voters that they're not a wasted vote," said Angus King, an independent who was governor of Maine in the 1990s.
This year, independent Eliot Cutler, a former Carter administration official, is running for governor of Maine. bFormer U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island is running as an independent gubernatorial candidate in his home state while independent Tim Cahill is seeking the governorship of Massachusetts.
