WATERBURY, Conn., July 6 (UPI) -- A Roman Catholic priest surrendered Tuesday in Waterbury, Conn., to answer charges that he stole $1.3 million from his parish.
The Rev. Kevin Gray, 64, has been on medical leave from Sacred Heart/Sagrado Corazon Church since April 15, The Hartford Courant reported. He has been assigned to various churches in Waterbury for 26 years, becoming well known in the city.
The archdiocese of Hartford said it uncovered unauthorized spending during a review of the parish accounts and referred the matter to police May 21. Investigators say Gray spent church money on hotels and restaurants, clothes and male escort services, embezzling $1.3 million since 2003.
The Rev. John Gatzak, the diocesan director of communications, said Sacred Heart did not have a parish financial council and Gray did not submit annual financial reports to the diocese, both red flags that led to the review.
