WASHINGTON, July 5 (UPI) -- President Obama spent part of his holiday Monday on the phone with two key U.S. figures in Afghanistan, Ambassador Karl Eikenberry and Gen. David Petraeus.
The White House said in a statement the president "underscored that his thoughts are with them and their teams on this holiday weekend, expressed his appreciation for their sacrifice and reiterated the importance of our vital mission in Afghanistan."
Petraeus took over this weekend as the top commander of the U.S. and NATO forces in the war in Afghanistan.
Obama also made a congratulatory phone call to newly elected Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski.
The president will travel to Kansas City, Mo., Thursday to tour Smith Electric Vehicles and deliver remarks on the economy, the White House said.
