BAGHDAD, July 3 (UPI) -- Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill arrived in Baghdad Saturday for a three-day visit with U.S. troops and to meet with Iraqi leaders.
The vice president was scheduled for a series of meetings with Iraqi political leaders in a bid to get U.S. diplomacy back on track before the planned August drawdown of U.S. forces begins, The New York Times reported. The trip is the fourth to Iraq for Biden as vice president.
The White House said Biden will meet with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, opposition leader Iyad Allawi, U.S. military commanders, and the U.N. Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq Ad Melkert.
"This visit is welcome at a time when politicians cannot find a solution themselves," Wael Abdul Latif, a Shiite member of the newly elected Iraqi Parliament, told the Times.
Mrs. Biden, on her first trip to Baghdad, planned to join National Guard troops preparing to return home to celebrate Independence Day and meet with civilian U.S. Embassy personnel.
