RYE, N.Y., July 1 (UPI) -- Police in Rye, N.Y., have advised parents not to allow children to play outside in the evening after a 3-year-old girl was bitten by a coyote.
"We are presuming at this point that all coyotes are dangerous animals that may harm our children, and we'll treat them as such," Rye Police Commissioner William Connors said Wednesday.
The girl was attacked Tuesday night and suffered bite marks on the left side of her neck and torso. Her parents chased off the animal.
The White Plains (N.Y.) Journal says the bites were not life-threatening but marked the second coyote attack on a child in the city since Friday, when a 6-year-old girl was attacked by two coyotes. Her injuries also were not life-threatening.
Police brought in professional trappers to assist in a hunt for the offending animals.
The Journal said three attempts had been made to shoot coyotes since Friday. The city has sought help from county and state agencies and the federal government to get rid of the animals but discouraged private citizens from taking part in the hunt.
