Alleged spy refuses to reveal identity

NEW YORK, July 1 (UPI) -- U.S. District Court documents indicate one of the alleged spies arrested this week in New York has admitted he worked for Russian intelligence.

CNN said it has obtained court documents indicating Juan Lazaro gave police a lengthy statement following his arrest Monday.

Lazaro, who appeared at a detention hearing Thursday to determine whether he is eligible for bail, was arrested in Yonkers, N.Y. CNN said he told investigators his name isn't really Juan Lazaro and he was not born in Uruguay. He refused to give his real name, he said, out of loyalty to the "service."

Lazaro is married to another of the suspects, Vicky Pelaez.

Court hearings for two other alleged spies in Boston were postponed until July 16, the Justice Department said. Three other suspects appeared in federal court in Arlington, Va., but their cases were continued to Friday.

Ten alleged spies were arrested in the United States this week and an 11th, Christopher Metsos, 55, was arrested in Cyprus but vanished after he was released on bail.

The suspects are accused of conspiring to recruit intelligence agents. Nine of them also face money-laundering charges.
