BRUSSELS, June 25 (UPI) -- The organization responsible for managing the assignment of Internet domain names gave approval for a .xxx domain at a Brussels conference.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, gave initial approval during the conference to create the porn-only domain as outlined by Florida-based company ICM Registry, the BBC reported Friday.
ICM Registry, which has sought the creation of .xxx for years, said the domain will make it easier to filter inappropriate content from other domains.
Stuart Lawley, chairman of the company, said ICANN's decision was "great news for those that wish to consume, or avoid, adult content."
ICANN officials said they will now hold talks with ICM to ensure there is sufficient interest in the domain from the adult entertainment industry.
ICM said the first .xxx sites could go live as early as next year.
