Rat blamed for Yakima, Wash., fire

YAKIMA, Wash., June 21 (UPI) -- A fire that heavily damaged a Veterans of Foreign Wars building in Yakima, Wash., is being blamed on a rat, fire officials said.

Investigators say the rat chewed through an electrical cord Friday, setting itself on fire, Yakima's KAPP-TV reported.

The rat ran to its nest near a piano and other flammable materials, and the resultant fire spread through the building. The blaze damaged several rooms, including one featuring what VFW members say were priceless war memorabilia.

The damages could run to more than a million dollars, the Yakima Fire Department said.
