'Storm' of aftershocks in Southern Calif.

LOS ANGELES, June 16 (UPI) -- A swarm of earthquakes along the California-Mexico border are likely aftershocks of the Easter Sunday 7.2 quake in the region, scientists say.

The swarm began Monday night with a 5.7 magnitude temblor felt across Southern California, followed by more than a thousand aftershocks, the Los Angeles Times reported. Most were small, but several measured more than 4.0 in magnitude, the newspaper said.

The aftershocks are likely to continue for some time, scientists say.

"With something as big as a 7.2, the aftershocks are going to continue for years or decades," Susan Hough, a U.S. Geological Survey seismologist, said.

Many of the recent aftershocks have been centered on the small town of Ocotillo in California's Imperial Valley. The Imperial County region was hit by seven quakes greater than magnitude 3.0 Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, the Times reported.
