Man killed by stray dogs he cared for

HENRIETTA, Ohio, June 16 (UPI) -- An Ohio man was killed by the dogs he and his father had taken in as strays and cared for, police said.

Michael Kywa found the body of his son, Michael Winters, 30, early Tuesday afternoon in the driveway of their house in Henrietta in Lorain County, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. Coroner Paul Matus said there were hundreds of bites on the body and Winters' clothes had been ripped to shreds.

"When dogs develop a pack mentality, they can launch an attack on someone," Matus said. "I have never seen anything like this and I've been here since the 1970s."

Police Sgt. Donald Barker said the father and son were caring for about a dozen dogs. He said police killed two of them while rounding them up because they were so aggressive. The others will be put down because police have no way of determining which were involved in the attack.

Neighbors said there was at least one very large mastiff among the dogs, although some were small.
