City official accused of secret tapings

SHIRLEY, Mass., June 16 (UPI) -- The Shirley, Mass., town administrator is accused of mounting a video camera in a women's restroom and secretly recording conversations in his office.

Authorities said Kyle J. Keady has compiled "hundreds, perhaps thousands" of photos taken with the hidden cameras, the Boston Globe reported Wednesday. Police said computer hard drives seized from Keady's home and office contained numerous "close-up photos of various body parts" of Town Hall visitors.

Keady pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Ayer District Court to charges of illegal recording, illegal possession of a recording device, and video recording a person in a state of nudity. He is free on $2,500 bail and was ordered to stay away from Town Hall, victims and witnesses.

Attorneys for Keady, a member of a prominent political family in Shirley, said he is cooperating with authorities.

Court records indicated Keady had been surreptitiously photographing and recording people for at least nine months, the Globe said. Police said he confessed to hiding a camera in the women's restroom, saying it was "usually quiet enough to enter the women's room undetected."

Prosecutors also accused Keady of breaking into his assistant's home to photograph her undergarments and of using a baby monitor to record the town accountant, the newspaper said. Documents indicated Keady recorded conversations with pens equipped with a camera and recorder.
