The armed intruders came in through a window of an apartment in College Hill, Ohio, early Wednesday morning and ordered a 16-year-old girl to the floor at gunpoint, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
The girl and her 8-year-old brother, whom she was babysitting, were not harmed as the thieves made off with a flat-screen television and a cellphone, the newspaper said.
Police said they weren't sure yet why the children were alone, but noted it is not against the law for an older sibling to babysit a younger one.
A 16-year-old is "certainly old enough to take care of people," Cincinnati police Lt. Gary Brown said.
Police say they're not sure if the home was targeted or if the thieves knew who lived there.
"Home invasions with people home generally don't occur unless there's a specific reason that house is targeted," Brown said. "We have to take a look and see what happened: Was this house targeted for some reason?"
