Lightning destroys 62-foot Jesus statue

MONROE, Ohio, June 15 (UPI) -- A 62-foot statue of Jesus in an Ohio town was destroyed by fire when it was struck by lightning, officials said.

The "King of Kings" statue, depicting Jesus with his arms stretched skyward, was a landmark outside the Solid Rock Church in Monroe until it went up in flames Monday, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

"It burned to the ground. The whole statue is gone," Kim Peace, a police dispatcher, said.

Several people called 911 to report the blaze during a severe thunderstorm, and fire crews went to the scene to find the statue in flames and a nearby amphitheater burning, the newspaper said.

No injuries were reported, the Enquirer said.

The sculpture measured 40 feet wide at its base, and was made of plastic and fiberglass over a steel frame. Only the frame survived the fire, the newspaper said.
