Search resumes for flash flood victims

LANGLEY, Ark., June 13 (UPI) -- The search resumed in Arkansas Sunday for some 23 people believed missing after a flash flood tore through a remote campground while families were sleeping.

Rescuers recovered two more bodies on Saturday bringing the death toll at the Albert Pike Campground to 18, The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

Chad Stover of the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management says because the campground is sandwiched between two mountains it "filled up like a bowl" during a downpour early Friday morning.

The Little Missouri River, normally 3 feet to 5 feet deep, rose to 20 feet in about four hours flooding the area.

Bill Sadler of the state police says there is no direct information on who was at the campground at the time of the flood since a log book was washed away.

Instead, rescuers are relying on clues such as cars parked near the campsite.

Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe said his staff will exhaust every option to locate those still missing, KTHV-TV, Little Rock, reports.
