Teen, mom surrender to face charges

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., June 10 (UPI) -- A Florida teenager and his mother held hands Thursday as they surrendered to face charges involving the fatal shooting of another boy.

Jeff Dilworth, 14, is charged with manslaughter, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported. His mother, Shari Edwards, 50, faces charges of culpable negligence for not properly securing the gun allegedly used to shoot Daniel Torres, 13.

The two teens were at Dilworth's home in Hollywood April 28 when they found the loaded handgun in his mother's nightstand, investigators say. Dilworth told police Torres removed the magazine and two bullets and gave him the weapon, and that Torres walked in front of him as he pulled the trigger.

Dilworth made a frantic call to 911: "I just shot my best friend on accident! Oh my God! It was an accident! I'm sorry!"

Charged as an adult, Dilworth faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. His mother could be imprisoned for five years.

The two walked into Broward County Jail at 9 a.m. hand in hand, accompanied by an unidentified man. They ignored the reporters and camera crews waiting for them.
