SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Ind., June 4 (UPI) -- A 16-month-old girl was killed in Indiana when her father accidentally backed over her in the driveway of the family home, authorities said.
The fatal accident happened in Shelby Township, Ind., Thursday night, the Detroit Free Press reported.
The father "was running up to the store to get something," Shelby Township Police Lt. Stan Muszynski said. "He saw the two kids in the garage, and the mom was actually in the garage, too.
"He got distracted somehow … the little one got away, no one saw her get close to the car and he backed over her," Muszynski said.
The toddler was rushed to a hospital where she died of her injuries, police said.
Muszynski said it was unlikely charges would be filed against the father in connection with the girl's death because it was an accident, the Free Press reported.
