MERCED, Calif., June 2 (UPI) -- U.S. marshals in California have captured a fugitive cop killer and child molester more than four years after he failed to register as a sex offender.

Paul Clouston, 73, who had been working as a maintenance man the past four years in Merced was arrested Tuesday without incident, the Los Angeles Times reported.

In 1973 Clouston was convicted of second-degree murder in the killing of a Buena Park police detective and was released from prison in 1982.

In 1991 Clouston pleaded guilty to seven counts of sexually abusing children in the Williamsburg, Va., area and was paroled in 2005. Since then he has been wanted for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution for failing to register as a sex offender.

"The capture of Paul Clouston is a testament to the effectiveness of our 15 most wanted list and the partnerships we maintain with other law enforcement agencies," said John F. Clark, director of the U.S. Marshals Service.
