Kindergarten boy killed in bus crash

ZANESVILLE, Ohio, June 2 (UPI) -- A young boy was killed Wednesday morning in Ohio when a school bus rolled over in a ditch after the driver lost control of the vehicle, police said.

The dead boy, Casey King, was described as a kindergarten student believed to be 5 or 6 years old, The Columbus Dispatch reported. The bus driver and another boy were injured.

The bus was en route to Nashport Elementary School in Muskingum County when it left the road, Steve Rine of the State Highway Patrol said.

The driver, Carol Oler, was reported to be in fair condition after being airlifted to Grant Medical Center. One boy was transferred to Nationwide Children's Hospital after all the children were evaluated at a Zanesville hospital.

Becky Burkhart, who arrived at the crash on her way to work, said two of her nephews were on the bus. She said one, Drew Burkhart, a kindergarten student, was sitting near Casey King in the front of the bus and suffered a crushed arm.

Her other nephew, Shae, 12, said he was able to kick open the back door of the bus.

"It's a dangerous road, but you always think your kids are safe when they get on the school bus," she said. "I'll never look at a school bus the same way again."
