Kilpatrick's new lawyer to ask for bail

DETROIT, June 2 (UPI) -- Kwame Kilpatrick's new lawyer says he will ask a judge to release the former Detroit mayor from prison while he appeals his sentence for probation violation.

Arnold Reed told reporters at a news conference Tuesday he plans to file an emergency motion this week, the Detroit Free Press reported. Kilpatrick was imprisoned last week after a judge determined he lied about his assets and sentenced him to 18 months to five years.

"When you analyze the law, you have to look at certain factors as to whether or not a person is entitled to a bond," Reed said during a news conference in his office. "The standard is different if a person has been convicted of an assaultive crime as opposed to a person who has not. Once you analyze and identify the proper standard, you have to look at whether the person is a danger, whether the person is a threat."

Kilpatrick was originally sentenced to a short jail term after he admitted lying on a deposition in a lawsuit brought by two police officers and agreed to resign from office.
