MOSCOW, May 28 (UPI) -- There is no justification for the United States to deploy Patriot missiles in Poland near its border with Russia, a Russian official said Friday.
Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko spoke at a news conference, RIA Novosti reported.
"We do not hide our reaction. We consider that there are no reasons -- neither military nor political -- that could justify the deployment of Patriot missiles in Poland, particularly next to the Russian border," Grushko said.
The U.S. military opened a base Monday near Morag in northeastern Poland, 50 miles from the border with the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. U.S. soldiers deployed there will be training the Polish military until 2012.
U.S. officials say the missile shield planned for Eastern Europe, with missiles in Poland and a radar installation in the Czech Republic, is a defensive measure against Iran and North Korea. But Russia is wary of an installation so close to its borders.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday Russia needs a better explanation of the need for the missile shield: "We have, so far, been told only one thing: Do not worry, this is not aimed against you."
