LOS ANGELES, May 24 (UPI) -- Three people who survived a three-car crash on a Southern California freeway were killed when a fourth car hit the wreckage, police said.
The three cars collided Sunday before dawn on the 101 Freeway in Sherman Oaks, blocking the three center lanes of traffic, the California Highway Patrol said.
Three male drivers and one female passenger had exited the cars to exchange information when a fourth car, driven by Haik Madoyan, 25, of Glendale, crashed into the wreckage, police said.
Two of the drivers, Santiago Vasquez, 24, of Hawthorne and Neil Hillan, 47, of North Hollywood, were killed along with the female passenger, Norma Najera-Villeda, 41, of Inglewood, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.
The third driver, Antulio Aju, 30, of Sun Valley, escaped the second collision by running to the side of the road.
Madoyan was detained by officers, but police officials did not say why.
