MADISON, Wis., May 21 (UPI) -- Wisconsin plans to repeat an e-waste collection event that was believed to be the largest ever roundup of its kind in its debut last year, officials said.
In May 2009 more than 800,000 pounds of obsolete TVs, computers, VCRs, cellphones and other electronic devices were dropped off at a recycling point by some 10,000 vehicles, The (Madison) Capital Times reported Friday.
The number of drop-off lanes, staffed by volunteers, will be doubled for the June 19 event, officials said.
"It'll be tough to top last year's performance," county official Kathleen Falk said, "but thanks to the generosity of our great partners, we are once again offering this free service, hoping to collect many tons of old TVs and computers and keep them out of the landfill."
A Wisconsin company, Universal Recycling Technologies, is working with electronics manufacturers to cover the cost of the recycling event, the Capital Times reported.
