Cartoonist apologizes for 'Mohammed Day'

SEATTLE, May 21 (UPI) -- A Seattle cartoonist has apologized for her work inspiring the "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" Facebook group.

Molly Norris said her satirical April cartoon, which she said was inspired by Comedy Central's actions against a "South Park" episode featuring the Muslim prophet, was not meant to be taken seriously, the BBC reported Friday.

Norris wrote on her blog that the cartoon was "hijacked" by the creators of the Facebook group and used in a campaign she deemed "offensive to Muslims who did nothing to endanger our right to expression in the first place."

Depictions of Mohammed are forbidden in Islam.

A court in Pakistan ordered Facebook blocked in the country as a result of the controversy.

Officials in Pakistan said YouTube was also blocked due to "growing sacrilegious content" on the video-sharing site.
