Census worker allegedly a sex offender

PENNSAUKEN TOWNSHIP, N.J., May 19 (UPI) -- A New Jersey mother says she recognized the U.S. Census Bureau worker who showed up at her home as a registered sex offender.

Amy Schmalbach, 33, of Pennsauken Township said she answered questions the man posed when he came to her door May 4 and then checked online to verify her suspicions before calling the police, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Tuesday.

It turns out the official census worker using the alias Jamie Shepard was registered sex offender Frank J. Kuni, 47. Police arrested him the next day, the Inquirer said.

Kuni, 47, was held in the Camden County Jail on charges of false representation and impersonating a public official, authorities said.

"If I had not recognized who this person was, none of my neighbors would have, and I believe he would have continued to go door to door," Schmalbach said.

Kuni served about four years in prison for endangering the welfare of a child in November 1996, burglary and other violations, a state Web site said.
