Teen to be tried as adult in shooting

PORTSMOUTH, Va., May 18 (UPI) -- A 15-year-old Portsmouth, Va., boy is to be tried as an adult for allegedly firing a gun into the air in his high school cafeteria, authorities said.

Keith Elliott faces charges of brandishing a firearm, discharging a firearm in an occupied school, use of a firearm while breaking and entering, and underage possession of a gun.

After the April 28 incident, Elliott allegedly told police he was tired of being picked on, didn't plan to hurt anyone and just wanted to demonstrate he was not a "punk," police records said. No one was injured.

Monday, Judge William Moore Jr. sent the case to adult court after watching a video of terrified students fleeing the cafeteria, The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reported Tuesday.

It was "extremely dumb, extremely reckless," Rebecca Robinson said of her client's behavior.

Elliott was arrested after he left the gun on a table and walked outside the building. He allegedly told police he had been smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol earlier in the day.
