Two off-duty officers killed in N.Y. crash

NEW YORK, May 17 (UPI) -- A one-car crash on the Bronx River Parkway in New York killed two off-duty police officers and seriously injured four women, officials said.

Officers Edwin Paulino, 25 and Kim Hoyoung, 32, died Sunday, The New York Times reported Monday. Their four women passengers were in serious condition at Jacobi Medical Center, police said.

The car hit a guardrail and flipped over, shearing the top and throwing the women from the vehicle.

Ruth Briones, the mother of one of the women, said her daughter, Melina Ramirez, 26, told her in the hospital Paulino and Hoyoung allegedly were inebriated when they offered the women a ride home from a party.

Police officials said blood tests would determine whether alcohol was a factor in the crash, which occurred just hours after an on-duty officer was critically injured when a motorcycle hit him during a foot chase in Brooklyn.

Carlos Olmedo, 31, was hit Sunday as he chased suspects who jumped from a stolen car and ran.
