Facebook to simplify privacy controls

LONDON, May 14 (UPI) -- U.S.-based social networking site Facebook says it will simplify privacy controls after complaints by members about its handling of personal information.

Some members have considered deleting their accounts after critical media stories led several well-known technology commentators and bloggers to remove their data from the site and recommend others consider such a move, the Financial Times reported Thursday.

Searches on Google for the phrase "delete Facebook account" have doubled in the past week, the search engine company said.

Facebook denies losing any significant number of members but has responded with additional efforts to help users change and control their own privacy settings, the Times said.

"We have always acknowledged that there is a difficult balance between precision ... of the controls and simplicity and ease of use," said Elliot Schrage, Facebook's vice president of public policy.

"As a result of some of the recent announcements, we may have moved ... too far away from simplicity and ease of use," Schrage said.

"We think we need to take steps to move back in the other direction."
