'Son of Sam' denied parole for 5th time

NEW YORK, May 11 (UPI) -- Convicted New York serial killer David Berkowitz, who was known as "Son of Sam," for the fifth time was denied parole, officials said.

Berkowitz, 56, said he wishes to remain in prison, but he automatically comes up for parole every two years, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

Berkowitz stalked lovers' lanes and was convicted of killing six people and wounding seven during 1976 and 1977. He is serving six life sentences at a maximum security prison, the newspaper said.

Berkowitz said he is now a Jew for Jesus and has taken the name, "Son of Hope."

"Your actions exhibited a total disregard for not only the law but the lives of innocent members of society," the state parole board said last week.

"Not only did you harm the victims and their families, but the N.Y.C. community as a whole. Your release is not in the interest of the public safety and welfare," the parole board said.
