MADISON, Wis., May 6 (UPI) -- There's no shortage of potential pretenders to the political throne that is the U.S. House seat being vacated by Wisconsin's David Obey, observers say.
Obey announced Tuesday he won't seek re-election this year, meaning come January someone other than the 71-year-old Democrat will be representing Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District for the first time in 42 years.
"Fundamentally, it instantly flips it from Democrat-favored to a tossup," Charles Franklin, a University of Wisconsin-Madison political scientist, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Among the Democrats whose names are being bandied about are state Sens. Russ Decker, who is the majority leader, Julie Lassa and Pat Kreitlow, and state Reps. Amy Sue Vruwink, Louis Molepske Jr. and Donna Seidel. Others may be in the wings, as well, including Wausau lawyer Christine Bremer Muggli, the newspaper said.
On the Republican side, state Rep. Jerry Petrowski is said to be pondering a run along with Ashland County District Attorney Sean Duffy and Rudolph farmer Dan Mielke.
Contenders have until July 13 to file their candidacy papers. State primaries are Sept. 14.
