MOUNT HOLLY, N.J., May 5 (UPI) -- A South Jersey school district has banned from its library one of three gay-themed books attacked by a right-wing group.
The Rancocas Valley Board of Education said at a meeting Tuesday night that "Revolutionary Voices: A Multicultural Queer Youth Anthology" included some obscene material, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The board oversees a regional high school for students in the Mount Holly area.
"We felt, from an obscenity perspective, there were some things our children didn't need to see," said Jesse Adams, a member of the board. "We don't allow our children to curse in school, and we don't think this is something we should be promoting in the school."
Michael Mokalski, the school superintendent, said a group of people called at a March meeting for removing "Revolutionary Voices" and two other books from the library. The group later said they belong to the 9.12 Project, a watchdog organization promoted by conservative radio host Glenn Beck.
Most of those at Tuesday's meeting, including parents, students and librarians, opposed removing any books.
