TEHRAN, April 29 (UPI) -- A U.S. military official downplayed the buzzing of a naval carrier and its escort vessels last week by Iranian aircraft, saying such encounters are common.
The Iranian reconnaissance plane had been flying near the Dwight D. Eisenhower strike group for about 20 minutes before it made a low pass April 21, the Navy Times reported Wednesday.
The official said he didn't know whether the Eisenhower took any defensive actions. The Eisenhower and its escorts tracked the surveillance plane the entire time, the defense official said.
A series of Iranian naval exercises took place last week in the Persian Gulf.
The official said the incident occurred in international waters, but said information wasn't available about where it took place, such as in the Persian Gulf or the Gulf of Oman.
"From our perspective, this is not something to get excited about," the official said. "(This) is within the bounds of what has happened in the past."
